Door Supervisors with Handcuffs
Recently I have seen more and more SIA Door Supervisors with handcuffs clearly on display while working at venues.
While it is good to have additional knowledge and skills with their use. It does seem excessive and unnecessary for particular locations.
As SIA Door Supervisors, we have a critical responsibility to ensure the safety of the public and maintain order in sometimes volatile environments.
While handcuffs can be an essential tool for managing certain situations, they come with significant risks:
Legal Implications:
Using handcuffs improperly can lead to legal challenges, including potential accusations of assault or unlawful restraint. Supervisors must understand the legal boundaries and ensure they’re trained in their correct use.
Escalation of Conflict:
Carrying handcuffs may unintentionally escalate situations. For some individuals, the sight of handcuffs can increase aggression or cause panic, complicating what could be a manageable confrontation.
Responsibility and Accountability:
With handcuffs comes the responsibility to use them safely, humanely, and only when absolutely necessary. Misuse can not only endanger the individual involved but also harm the reputation of security professionals.
Breach of human rights Article 2, 3 and 5 if not used correctly. Their is a fine balance to be found between each article.
As professionals, we must always be aware of these risks and exercise sound judgment. Proper training, continuous assessment of the situation, and clear understanding of legal requirements are key to ensuring safety for all parties involved.
